Helpful things to know about Couples Therapy at LingYu
Who is couples therapy for?
Couples therapy, also known as marriage counseling, is for couples in any committed or intimate relationship, whether you are married, engaged, dating or living together.
Do both of us have to attend?
Couples therapy works best when both partners take part, but you do not have to start together. If your partner is not ready yet, you can begin with individual therapy to work on your own concerns, and join together later if that fits.
Can couples therapy help if we are thinking about separating?
Yes. Couples therapy can help partners who are considering separation. It gives you space to understand what is happening between you and to think through your options with support.
Will the therapist take sides?
No. A couples therapist's role is to support the relationship and both of you, not to decide who is right. Each partner is also asked to reflect on their own part and growth.
What happens in the first session?
Your therapist will ask what brought you in, what each of you hopes will change, and how you want to work together. You will also have time to ask questions about how therapy works.
How do we choose a therapist, and what if we speak different languages?
You can browse our team page and filter by language and areas of focus. If you and your partner prefer different languages, tell us when you contact us and our front desk will try to find a therapist who works for both of you.
What if we are afraid of each other, or there has been violence?
Couples therapy works best when both partners feel safe. If you are afraid of your partner or there has been violence, please tell us before booking joint sessions. We can talk with you first, and individual sessions may be a better starting point. If you are in immediate danger, call 911.
